Friends of Association Swiss Ampasilava

We contributed to the creation of a hospital in Madagascar and we actively support the association every year

The hospital

Vezo Hospital was inaugurated on October 15, 2008, only two years after it was conceived. At the beginning it was just a small clinic, then the increase in patients coming from increasingly distant villages confirmed that the idea was right and appreciated by the population.

The Malagasy authorities have been interested in the hospital project from the beginning, intervening in the negotiations for the drafting of the agreement in which the then general director of the Policlinico S.Orsola_Malpighi of Bologna also actively participated. The agreement provides, among other things, the inclusion of the Vezo hospital in the health service of Madagascar.

Doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists, and other healthcare and logistical-organizational professionals from all over Italy are participating in the Hospital Project, ready to make themselves available and participate in this project. This choice, in line with the WHO Alma Ata Declaration of 1978, which identifies health as a fundamental right of every person and strongly promotes basic healthcare in developing countries, guarantees the Malagasy population a healthcare service, from diagnosis to treatment.

The structure of the hospital

The hospital covers an area of approximately 700 square meters and hosts (since the beginning of 2017):

  • 3 hospital rooms with 11 beds

  • 1 operating room (multipurpose) completely renovated

  • 3 general clinics

  • 3 specialist clinics (Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Physiotherapy, Dentistry)

  • 1 dressing room

  • 1 diagnostic imaging room (conventional, endoscopic and ultrasound radiology)

  • 1 Analysis laboratory

  • Digital radiology (RIS system, PACS) which, combined with telemedicine, allows the reading of images also from Italy (S. Orsola-Malpighi and Maggiore hospitals in Bologna) and above all allows the reduction of pollution due to the disposal of chemical waste connected to traditional plates.

  • The facility is equipped with an appropriate incinerator.
